Then "we are one In the same" means, that this advanced species has made the same mistakes, and has had to go through the same struggles humanity has suffered through, as a young species before finally evolving into the advanced race they have become. The singer is "humanity", the sinking ship is "civilization", and the savior that he is asking for help from, is some "older, advanced life form" out there. I think this is about humanity's self destruction.
